In the world of motorsports, Lamborghini’s iconic Diablo made its mark, particularly through a series of factory racing specials that elevated performance and innovation. In 1995, Lamborghini embarked on the creation of a GT1-spec Diablo for the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans, enlisting Amos Racing in the UK and receiving support from the Larrousse Formula One team. However, a last-minute disagreement led to a legal dispute that abruptly halted the project. During the same year, the Japan Lamborghini Owners Club (JLOC) tasked Lamborghini with developing two competition vehicles and a road-ready model for JGTC racing in Japan, resulting in the “Jota” series with technical assistance from Lamborghini Engineering. Echoing Porsche’s GT1 endeavor, Lamborghini collaborated with Signes Advanced Technologies to craft a GT1-class racing version of the Diablo. While the re-engineered 6.0 L V12 engine and extensive modifications were showcased in 1997, financial challenges ultimately hindered the project’s continuation.

The Diablo SV-R, unveiled in 1996, marked Lamborghini’s foray into purpose-built motorsport vehicles and introduced the Diablo Supertrophy—a homegrown racing competition featured as a support race during the 1996 24 Hours of Le Mans. Building upon this achievement, Lamborghini ventured into GT2 class racing with the Diablo, leading to the Diablo GT2. Following Audi’s acquisition of the company, the project was discontinued, and an updated version, the Diablo GT2 Evoluzione, remained unrealized. Finally, in the 2000 season, Lamborghini introduced the Diablo GTR—a transformation of the Diablo GT into a track-focused machine with enhanced power and a focus on shedding weight, solidified Lamborghini’s legacy in motorsports.
