The BMW M3 Lightweight, as the name suggests, was all about shedding excess weight to boost performance. This version featured numerous weight-saving measures, including lightweight doors, thinner glass, and carbon fiber-reinforced trim components. These changes significantly reduced the car’s weight, enhancing agility and responsiveness. While the engine specifications remained consistent with the US model, the reduction in weight translated to improved acceleration, sharper handling, and an overall more engaging driving experience. The Lightweight also included distinctive badging and graphics, making it visually distinct from other E36 M3 variants. For enthusiasts seeking an uncompromising, track-focused experience, the M3 Lightweight was the ideal choice.

The Lightweight M3—flashy Motorsport custom decals adorning the front hood and rear trunk/fender and you guessed it. BMW trimmed non-neccessary features and reduced the overall weight . This variant was limited to 100 vehicles to allow racing teams in the US to use the M3 platform.

  1. I bought my US version in 1995. Never complained about making the payment. 😉 Bilstein / HR sport springs with Turner Motorsport sway bars make the handling even more impressive and greatly reduces body roll. Front Strut Bar, X Brace and Rear Shock tower bar tighten the chassis. Upgrade intake system with Euro Airbox, 3.5 Air mass , larger throttle body , Stage 3 Dinan chip , Billy Boat exhaust and free flowing Cats add that extra punch the engine needed. I had the manager for dealership where I bought it in 95 tried to buy it back. You will pry it from my dead hands and then it goes to my son. Absolutely Fantastic Car and is a blast on track days … ENJOY !
