GT-S:
The Sport GT-S was the performance-oriented trim of the AE86 lineup in the US. It featured a 1.6-liter 4A-GE engine, equipped with Toyota’s variable valve timing system known as “Twin Cam.” This engine produced around 112 horsepower and 97 lb-ft of torque. The GT-S model was equipped with higher-performance suspension components, including stiffer springs and dampers, as well as larger front and rear sway bars, which improved its handling and cornering capabilities. It also came with four-wheel disc brakes, adding to its stopping power. The GT-S trim was available as a coupe and featured distinctive exterior styling cues like a front chin spoiler and rear spoiler. This trim was highly favored by driving enthusiasts for its agile and responsive nature.
SR5:
The SR5 was the mid-level trim and offered a more accessible option for those seeking a rear-wheel-drive Corolla. It came equipped with a 1.6-liter 4A-C engine, which was less powerful than the GT-S model, producing around 88 horsepower and 96 lb-ft of torque. The SR5 had a softer suspension setup compared to the GT-S, providing a more comfortable ride for daily commuting and general use. This trim was available in both coupe and hatchback body styles. While it lacked the performance prowess of the GT-S, the SR5 still provided an enjoyable rear-wheel-drive experience and became popular among enthusiasts on a tighter budget.
DX:
The DX trim was the base model of the AE86 lineup in the US. It offered a practical and economical choice for customers, featuring a 1.6-liter 4A-C engine, similar to the SR5. The DX trim had a more basic suspension setup, making it suitable for everyday driving without a focus on sporty handling. It was available in both coupe and hatchback variants, and while it lacked the performance features of the GT-S and the comfort features of the SR5, it still retained the fun-to-drive nature characteristic of the AE86 lineup.
