Beyond its success as a road car, the Ferrari 308 also made a mark in motorsport, particularly in rally racing. The 308 GTB was homologated for Group 4 racing, a category that allowed heavily modified production cars to compete. Ferrari developed a rally version of the 308 GTB, known as the 308 GTB Group 4, which featured numerous modifications to meet the demands of rallying. These included a stripped-down interior, reinforced chassis, upgraded suspension, and an increase in power output. The rally-spec engine could produce around 300 hp, depending on the specific setup and regulations of the event.

The 308 GTB Group 4 achieved success in various rallies, most notably in the Tour de France Automobile and the Targa Florio. Its agile handling, coupled with a strong and reliable V8 engine, made it competitive in a field dominated by more specialized rally cars. The Group B 308 GTB featured even more extensive modifications, including further weight reduction, advanced aerodynamic enhancements, and a highly tuned engine capable of producing over 400 hp. Despite its potential, the 308’s success in Group B was limited, as the competition included some of the most legendary rally cars of all time, such as the Audi Quattro and Lancia 037. Nevertheless, the 308’s participation in Group B added another chapter to its rich motorsport legacy.
