The Impala name originated from the 1956 General Motors Motorama show car, which showcased Corvette-inspired design elements, notably the grille. Inspired by the elegance of the African antelope, the Impala was chosen as the car’s emblem. The concept car, painted in a striking emerald green metallic with a white interior, featured the distinctive hardtop styling. In June, Clare MacKichan’s design team, in collaboration with Pontiac designers, commenced the development of the shared 1958 General Motors “A” body, establishing its fundamental packaging and dimensions. In October, General Motors Styling Vice President Harley Earl observed the first styling sketch that would eventually shape the final Chevrolet vehicle. Within seven months, the foundational design was fully realized.
