Atomic Blonde (2017): Modified Type 964 911 Carrera 4
A more stylized and hyper-action thriller, Atomic Blonde takes place just before the collapse of the Berlin Wall. The movie revolves around a MI6 spy Lorraine Broughton (played by film star Charlize Theron), where she has to recover a list of double agents that is being smuggled into West Berlin before it falls to the KGB’s hands. While meeting up with her MI6 team, Lorraine finds out that her MI6 team are actually KGB agents and has to fight off the double agents in a moving car. She manages to fight off her captors before being immediately picked up by her real contact David Percival (portrayed by James McAvoy) with his modified Porsche Type 964.
What sets this vehicle apart is its distinctive features. Despite sporting a Turbo-style whale tail deck lid, it’s not a Turbo model. Interestingly, the character portrayed by James McAvoy seems to appreciate the aesthetic, going so far as to equip the car with Porsche Cup 1 wheels, a style associated with the 964 Turbo from 1991. Given that the film is set in 1988/1989, this either suggests a form of wheel prototype or a lapse in continuity during the production of this wildly action-packed flick. We lean towards the latter. The car also boasts flag-style side mirrors, characteristic of early Type 964 Carreras, with a stubby nose and a long, sloping rear unmistakably identifying it as such. Granted, it’s been modified quite substantially, notably with a front from a U.S. spec car rather than the European model.
