A significant turning point occurred in 1963 when Porsche acquired the coachbuilding division, incorporating it into their operations. This acquisition led to a rebranding of the remaining part of the company as Recaro—a blend of “Reutter” and “Carosserie.” This change marked a strategic shift from coachbuilding to the design and manufacture of ergonomic, high-quality seats. As part of the acquisition deal, Recaro entered into a 10-year agreement to supply seats for Porsche vehicles, solidifying its role in the automotive industry. Notably, Recaro’s roots can be traced back to the Porsche 356, as the company was integral in its production, further cementing the longstanding relationship between the two brands.
The man behind this transformation was Wilhelm Reutter, who recognized the growing demand for specialized seating solutions in the automotive market. The company’s first product under the brand was the “Recaro Sportsitz,” a sport seat introduced in 1965.
