The company’s origins trace back to 1906, when it was founded as Stuttgarter Karosseriewerk Reutter & Co. in Stuttgart, Germany. Initially focused on coachbuilding, the company specialized in crafting custom car bodies, quickly establishing a reputation for exceptional craftsmanship and innovation. A significant turning point occurred in 1963 when Porsche acquired the coachbuilding division, incorporating it into their operations. This acquisition led to a rebranding of the remaining part of the company as Recaro—a blend of “Reutter” and “Carosserie.” This change marked a strategic shift from coachbuilding to the design and manufacture of ergonomic, high-quality seats. As part of the acquisition deal, Recaro entered into a 10-year agreement to supply seats for Porsche vehicles, solidifying its role in the automotive industry. Notably, Recaro’s roots can be traced back to the Porsche 356, as the company was integral in its production, further cementing the longstanding relationship between the two brands.

The man behind this transformation was Wilhelm Reutter, who recognized the growing demand for specialized seating solutions in the automotive market. Reutter’s vision was clear: to design seats that not only offered unparalleled comfort but also contributed to the overall driving experience. The company’s first product under the brand was the “Recaro Sportsitz,” a sport seat introduced in 1965. This seat set new standards with its lightweight construction, ergonomic design, and the use of innovative materials, quickly becoming popular among motorsport enthusiasts.
