Despite the challenges faced by rotary engines, Mazda’s dedication to innovation propelled them to integrate the Wankel rotary engine into some of their most iconic vehicles. Among these, the Mazda RX-7 and RX-8 stand out as shining examples of the rotary engine’s potential. However, Mazda’s experimentation with rotary power dates back even further, with models like the Mazda Cosmo, which introduced the world to the concept of a rotary-powered sports car in the 1960s. Following the Cosmo, Mazda continued to explore the possibilities of rotary engines, incorporating them into a diverse range of vehicles such as the Grand Familia, Luce, and even concept cars like the RX-500.

Each of these models showcased Mazda’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of automotive engineering with innovative rotary technology. Furthermore, the Savanna RX-7, introduced in the 1970s, captivated driving enthusiasts with its lightweight chassis, balanced handling, and the distinct hum of its rotary engine. Over the years, Mazda continued to refine and evolve the RX-7, culminating in the third-generation FD model, which boasted a twin-turbocharged rotary engine and timeless design. Similarly, the Mazda RX-8, launched in the early 2000s, carried the torch of rotary-powered performance with its unique four-door coupe layout and high-revving engine. Despite eventual discontinuation due to emissions regulations and reliability concerns, these Mazda vehicles remain revered among enthusiasts for their distinctive rotary powerplants and engaging driving dynamics.
