The Porsche 914 is probably among Porsche’s most visually recognizable models. Its low-to-the-ground stance and uniquely positioned orange indicators make it instantly identifiable from virtually every angle, and it represents a reasonable bargain for Porsche enthusiasts looking for a sporty car that doesn’t break the bank. However, for those seeking something a little more distinctive, SBX Cars recently had on offer a 914 with a bit more pizzazz to it.

The mid-engined, two-seat 914 was originally conceived in 1970 as a collaborative effort between Porsche and Volkswagen. The 914 was intended to serve as a sports car flagship for Volkswagen while simultaneously acting as an entry-level roadster for Porsche. This particular 1970 Porsche 914 Targa, showing 79,756 miles on the odometer, is finished in Liquid Silver over a black interior. At first glance, it may appear to be a simple, well-kept example, but there is far more to it than meets the eye. As part of Porsche’s 70th anniversary celebrations in 2018, this 914—along with 19 other Porsche vehicles—was selected to undergo an extensive restoration program. All 20 cars were finished in the same special Liquid Silver color, a shade derived from the 918 Spyder. Porsche Cars Great Britain, the sole importer of Porsche vehicles to the UK and Ireland, carried out this ambitious project, dedicating more than 500 hours of work across both body and mechanical restoration efforts. As a result, this Porsche 914 stands as the only factory-restored 914 built specifically to commemorate this milestone anniversary.

The air-cooled, longitudinally mounted 1.7-liter flat-four engine was completely rebuilt during the factory restoration, ensuring optimal performance as though it had rolled off the assembly line in 2018 rather than 1970. The engine produces 80 horsepower and 98 lb-ft of torque, which is delivered through a fully rebuilt five-speed manual transmission. Inside the cabin, the bucket seats were replaced as part of the restoration process. The interior was kept as classic and period-correct as possible, while still incorporating a touch of modern convenience in the form of a Bluetooth audio system and a Classic Vehicle Tracking System. Serving as a constant reminder of just how unique and historically significant this particular 914 is, a commemorative engraved plaque is positioned just forward of the shifter on the center console.

This particularly unique Porsche 914 Targa unfortunately went unsold, but that may be good news for anyone eager to get their hands on it, as it is likely to reappear at auction in the future. Alternatively, interested buyers could inquire directly through SBX Cars. The opportunity to own a truly special piece of Porsche history—fully restored to its original glory—is just an email or phone call away.
