The S15
Unfortunately, the S15 generation of the Nissan 240SX never officially made its way to the United States. This model was reserved exclusively for the Japanese market as the Silvia S15, and as such, American enthusiasts were left yearning for its sleek design and advanced features. The S15 came with various engine options, including a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four, making it a highly sought-after sports car for its performance and aesthetics.
Trim | Production | Engine | Power | Transmission | Drivetrain |
Spec-S | 1999 – 2002 | 2.0L SR20DE I4 | 163 HP / 165 PS / 121 kW | 5 or 6-Speed Manual 4-Speed Automatic | RWD |
Spec-R | 1999 – 2002 | 2.0 L SR20DET I4 (Turbo) | 247 HP / 250 PS / 184 kW | 5 or 6-Speed Manual 4-Speed Automatic | RWD |
So what’s the deal? Well due to stringent emissions regulations and safety standards that it did not meet the S15 wasn’t made for the US market. Emission standards during the late 1990s and early 2000s in the U.S. were exceptionally strict, and modifying the S15 to comply with them would have entailed costly alterations to the vehicle’s engine and exhaust systems. Additionally, meeting U.S. safety standards would have required substantial investments in redesigning the car’s structure and safety features. As a result, Nissan faced considerable challenges in bringing the S15 to the American market, ultimately leading to its omission and leaving enthusiasts to appreciate this sought-after model from afar.
